Reviewing a screen at an outdoor work site

Display brightness for outdoor and bright environments

Compare standard screen brightness in nits, then check the surface treatment and viewing angle for the place the device will be used.

Application scenario

What changes readability in bright light?

Screen brightness

A nit measures display luminance, the light the screen sends toward the viewer. Use the standard panel rating to draw up your shortlist.

Optical bonding

Bonding the cover glass to the display reduces reflections from the air gap between the layers.

Surface reflections

An anti-glare surface scatters reflections, while anti-reflective treatments reduce the light reflected by the surface.

Viewing angle

Contrast and reflections can change as the operator moves off-axis. Check the screen from the seat, shelf or mounting position where it will be read.

Display selection questions

Does a higher nit rating settle the choice for outdoor use?
Ambient reflections and viewing angle also affect the contrast you see. Try the same form in shade and in direct light at the working angle.
Which rating determines a model’s brightness band?
Each card is grouped by the standard panel rating. For example, the RT-I87J appears in the 500–799 nits band with its standard 550-nit panel and lists a 700-nit option.
Which tablet specifications explicitly mention sunlight readability?
RT-R16 and RT-IS19J describe their displays as sunlight-readable.
How should we evaluate a screen in a cab?
Place the sample at the intended mounting angle and read the dispatch form from the driver’s seat while parked. Check for reflections in both the display and the windscreen.
Can we test a panel before choosing a configuration?
You can request a sample for evaluation. Include the model, resolution and brightness rating in the request.
